Ezperimental study of the behaviour of joints between steel beams and concrete filled tubular (CFT) columns in fire

This paper presents the experimental study of the performance of joints between steel beams and Concrete Filled Tubular (CFT) columns in simple construction under fire conditions. Different types of joints were investigated, including fin plate, T-stub, reverse channel and endplate. The fire tests of this research were carried out in a structural assembly, consisting of a steel beam and two CFT columns in the form ofarugby goalpost. In total, 10 tests were carried out in the Fire Testing Laboratory of the University of Manchester. In each test, loads were applied to the beam and then the structural assembly was exposed to the standard fire condition in a furnace while maintaining the applied loads. Eight of the 10 test specimens were tested to failure during heating. All the joints behaved well before the steel beams had reached their limiting temperatures for flexural bending. The failure modes of the test specimens were always in the joint regions when the steel beams were in considerable catenary action. By appropriate design and protection of the joints, it is possible for the steel beams to develop catenary action and survive very high temperatures. In the other two tests, the test assembly was heated to temperatures close to the limiting temperature of the steel beam and then cooled down while still maintaining the applied loads on the beam. During cooling, the beams developed high tension forces, however there was no structural failure in the assemblies.
