A numerical investigation into the temperature distribution of steel hollow dual tubes
A feasibility study on the use of steel hollow dual tubes is presented. The main advantage of using the dual tubes as columns is that both tubes are used as structural members when there is no fire and the outer tube is used as fire protection to the inner tube when there is fire. Numerical simulation of a fire in a compartment containing this type of column shows that the inner tube can maintain a substantial level of capacity during the course of fire. Various combinations of size of the outer and inner tubes are used to deter-mine the optimum ratio to be used for fire engineering design.
