Thermoelastic behaviour of elastically restrained tubular steel arches

Because arches resist external loads mainly by axial compression, tubular steel arches are an efficient structural form that is finding extensive contemporary use, in particular in China. The behaviour of tubular steel arches under external mechanical loading has been studied previously, but studies of the behaviourof tubular steel arches under thermal loading do not appear to be reported in the open literature. In practice, tubular steel arches are often supported by other structural members, which provide elastic types of restraint at the arch ends, which participate in the structural response of the arch and which may influence significantly the in-plane thermoelastic behaviour and possible buckling of the arch. This paper presents a thermoelastic analysis for the behaviour of a rotationally restrained tubular steel circular arch that is uniformly heated, and it also studies the possible thermoelastic buckling of rotationally restrained shallow arch.
