Basic Structure of Daemonorops margarita Rattan Cane
Introduction Rattans, the climbing palms in the tropical rain forest of Southeast Asia and West Africa, provide the most important minor forest products (Walter, 2001). Rattans are important forest resources in China, and rattan cane is an important non-timber forest product second only to wood and bamboo, it can substitute for partial wood and play an important role in protecting forest resources. Daemonorops margaritae (Hance) Becc is endemic to China. Its cane is one of the most important commercial rattan canes in South China (Cai Zemo et al, 2003). Study on its anatomical characteristics will give great guidance to its classification, exploitation, utilization, processing and improvement.
