Measuring Voids in Low-density Fiberboard

Introduction The study focused on the use of image analysis to measure voids in micron flaky wood fiber low-density board (MFLB). MFLB was manufactured by forming long and flaky wood micro-fibers into flocculent mats (Fig. I) and pressing the mats to low-density boards. Low-density boards at a nominal density of 0.3 g/cm3 were made by mixing the fibers with air, steam and some volatiles during forming and the hot-pressing. This report presents the method to measure the void volume and size, shape and distribution of voids in MFLB.
