Rapidly Estimation of Fiber Length of Rattan Canes by Near Infrared Spectroscopy
Introduction Fiber is one of important characteristics of wood quality. Fiber features will directly determine the physical and chemical properties of wood and influence the utility of wood. Fiber length is a wood quality characteristic of central importance for the paper and pulp industry. Rattan is an important non-wood forest product resource in tropical forests. It is a very good material for furniture making and weaving. But there are only a limited number of studies dealing with about fiber length of rattan canes, especially, about NIR-based studies dealing with about fiber length of rattan canes. Near-infrarod (NIR) spectroscopy is a rapid, accurate and nondestructive technique that has been used to estimate wood properties. The objective of our study was to get the information about fiber length in 6 species rattan canes and evaluate the utility of NIR spectroscopy to predict their fiber length.
