Variability of Some Wood Quality Indicators of Pinus caribaea Morelet in Philippine Plantations
Introduction Pinus caribaea, also known as Cuban Pine, is considered one of the principal tree species in Central America. The wood offers a wide variety of uses, in places where the tree grows abundantly, it is utilized for general construction purposes. According to Hughes (1967) the wood is suitable for light and heavy construction, sleepers and piles, particleboards and furniture making. Moreover, the species is also a valuable source of raw materials for pulp and paper making (Chittenden, et. al. 1967). This is one of the reasons why the species is introduced in the Philippines. This has been developed as a plantation species in the Paper Industries Corporation of the Philippines (PICOP) in M indanao to provide long-fiber pulp for the manufacture of paper products.
