Crystallinity Change of Compressed Poplar Wood by PF Resin

Introduction With the implement of Natural Forest Protection policies in China, the plantation will play a more and more important role in the building of our national economy. However, the plantation wood, especially the poplar and the fir, have common characters of soft structure, low density and poor machinability, which limit their utilization. So its necessary to modify the plantation wood. In recent years, many foreign and domestic scholars have carried out considerable study on modifying wood by means of impregnation and compression with resins in high temperature, and proved that this method can improve such properties of wood as dimensional stability, hardness and abrasion resistance. Based on the work of Predecessors, this study adopted the way of impregnating and hot-pressing with a low molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin to treat poplar wood, and investigated the influence of weight percent gain (WPG) and compression ratio on the crystallinity change of compressed wood.
