Heat and UV Treatment for Controlling of Discoloration in Cedar Wood(Cryptomeria japonica)
Introduction Normally, cedar heartwood has a red color : However, it frequently changes to black (blackening phenomenon). It is believed that the blackening phenomenon of cedar is caused by oxidation polymerization of phenolic substances under weak alkaline conditions which occur after harvest. Because of the difference in color value between blackened cedar heartwood and sap wood, the blackened cedar has been used for lower value products such as fish boxes. It has studied the reason of blackening phenomenon of cedar. It has published that cedar red heartwood turns black because of sequirin-C wich is converted to a deep purple color products when in oxidation with weak alkalized.
