Measuring Deformation of Wood during Drying using an Optical Method

IntroductionNon-contact optical measurement based on Digital Image Correlation (DIC) principles seems to be a promising experimental technique for this kind of challenging measurements. This technique derived from optical spectrometry has been developed and used to measure deformation and strains of materials under various loading regimes since the late 1980s I. It has been already successfully applied to determine strains in specimens of solid wood, individual wood fibers, paper, wood based composites and semi-structures 2. Recently, such units has been used in the OSU Material Characterization Lab the DIC to visualize and measure the development and distribution of the strains in wood disks subject to cracking and to early detection of the development of drying checks in oak veneer 3.
