Mechanical Properties of Tension Wood Teak
Introduction Wood raw material species that contained high properties such as teak still has high demand in the market. Teak from plantation plays considerable role in recent years. Many logs from plantation were found as tension wood from the cross section figure. The juvenile teak was found lower in mechanical property (15 % in modulus of elasticity and 18% in modulus of rupture) than in the mature wood (I). However, there was a study revealed that there was not significantly different of an average densities profile in tension wood at different stem height for the 15-year-old teak (2). Tension wood has different properties than normal wood. Inferior properties in strength, quality of wood surface, longitudinal shrinkage are found in tension wood (3). Since, there are not available data on tension wood for teak sample. The objective in this paper was to identify mechanical properties of tension wood in 23-year-old teak.
