Study on Isolation for Sapstain Fungi and their Effect on Discoloration of Betula Platyphylla Suk. Wood

Introduction Betula platyphyila Suk. wood is a quick growing hardwood and one of widely used industrial species in northern China. It has white and clean surface, straight grain, moderate hardness, even structure, preferable quality. So it is preferred by furniture manufactures, interior decoration and the wood-based panel factories. However, it is easy discolored during both air drying and kiln drying, especially easily getting blue stain and brown stain when it is infected by some fungus. In such case its surface would be completely destroyed and limited in use. An experiment was conducted to study the isolation, purification and selection for sapstain fungi from Betula platyphylla Suk.wood based on the existence of sapstain fungi and its discoloration characteristic. Results show that Belulaplatyphylla Suk. wood was easily infected by sapstain fungi, and the fungi that led to discoloration were screened out by inoculating fungi on wood.
