Study on the Wettability of Poplar Wood Impregnated by Phenol-formaldehyde Resin
Introduction In recent years, the research on the wood modification of poplar plantation had been a highlight to domestic scholars. Impregnating treatment with resin had been proved to be an effective method to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of wood (Militz 1993, Fang Guizhen et al.1999; Liu Junliang et al. 2002, 2004; Gindl et al. 2004; Furuno et al. 2003). After the impregnation, the wettability of wood will also change. The wettabiliy is very important parameter for wood gluing and coating. In this study, poplar plantation wood was first impregnated by low molecular weight phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin solution with 30% concentration by vacuum-pressure process. And then the wettability of sanded and non-sanded radial and tangential sections from untreated and treated poplar wood was tested respectively by the measurement of contact angles using different liquids.
