Analysis of Bending Strength of Continuous Column with Various Mortise-Tenon Joints

Introduction It is widely said that in terms of traditional Japanese wooden-house construction, the strength of continuous column is higher than ordinary column. Meanwhile, mortises in various sizes are made in a continuous column from various directions, then it is supposed that the strength of continuous column will decrease as section deficit increases. When the behavior of the traditional Japanese wooden-house under seismic loading is analyzed, the mechanical properties of continuous columns under high-speed loading are required. In our previous study, several static and dynamic bending tests on column with different type mortises were conducted and we obtained the valuable experimental data. The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between the bending strength and mortise volume. We tried some theoretical considerations for these experimental results.
