Evaluation for Column-Sill Joint Using Compressed Wooden Fastener

Introduction Compressed wood (CW), which was developed for effective utilization of low density material like Japanese cedar which is relatively abundant in Japan, has been gradually introduced as joint material in Japanese post and beam structure. CW may be suitable for fastener used at a location where severe compression or shear stress concentration occurs by virtue of its high material properties because it can be produced to have a high density. In this research, CW plate and dowel type fastener was introduced to connect the joint in post and beam structure. This joint was designed so that final rupture occurred in the sill part, which prevent from the failure of joint in brittle manner. In order to take advantage of characteristic properties of CW and to achieve optimum performance as joint, two compressed plates inserted joint were proposed as to give multiple shear layers for each compressed dowel, in this report, mechanical model for optimum joint design was introduced and compared with experimental results.
