Mechanically Grading of Lumber of Chinese Fir

Introduction Commercial application of machine stress rated (MSR) lumber is increasing in the world for its less variable quality compared to visual graded lumber. Bending tests were conducted on Chinese fir 45 by 90mm lumbers, sampled from one typical plantation stand in Fujian Province. The relationship between strength and stiffness of Chinese fir lumber was found to establish MSR grading boundaries. The connection between tests data and specifications for MSR lumber in Chinese Standard GB 50005 Code for design of timber structures would be discussed in the paper.
