Modeling Approach in Simulating Structural Behavior of the Pinned Mortise-and-Tenon Joint under Static Loading

Introduction The pinned mortise-and-tenon joint is an essential element of connection in Japanese traditional timber construction. The ductility of such connection plays a great role in energy dissipation during loading. To improve the understanding of its performance in load bearing, a single inverted T-shaped connection was investigated in this study. A three-dimensional finite element analysis was carried out to simulate the response of the pinned mortise-and-tenon joint under monotonic loading. The experimental verification revealed that the numerical analysis was available for simulating its mechanical response during loading. This provides an advantage to figure out the invisible deformation behavior, complicated contact phenomena and remarkable embedment characteristics within the connection.
