Optimal Thickness Ratio of Laminated Wood Products Made of Densified Balsam Fir

Introduction The mechanical densification of wood provides a new approach to utilize the low-density specie. Use of the optimized pressing parameters canassist in manufacturing the densified wood of the minimum thickness recovery, the higher surface hardness and better glue bonding strength. The target products of densified wood would be flooring, stair treads and table tops. This study was aimed at developing a laminated wood product with the densified surface laminate and virgin wood substrate. To reach this goal, the most rational thickness ratio between surface layer and substrate was optimized, in terms of modulus of elasticity and coefficient of hygroscopic expansion, to minimize the cupping of the laminated wood products when subjected to moisture.
