Racking Performance of Gypsum Board Sheathed Wood-framed Wall with Openings

Introduction It is known that the nonstructural wood -framed wall shows low horizontal shear resistance and the effective rigidity of a wall component can be formed through the application of structural sheathing panel with nailings. Yeh (2002) reported only 64 N/m of shear strength for a wood frame structure without any sheathing panels applied. According to the report from Arima after South Hyogo Earthquake, it is suggested that certain horizontal shear resistance can be provided through certain nonstructural partition wall sections for a building (1995). The openings on the wall sections will reduce lateral resistance during the earthquake events. Chuang et al. (2002) reported that the shear strength of the gypsum board sheathed wall subjected to monotonic lateral loads is reduced 64. 1% if the opening reaches to 17.6%. To enhance the load-displacement relation, the effect of cyclically lateral loading applications on the horizontal shear performance of gypsum board sheathed wood-framed wall with openings is investigated in the study.
