The Evaluation on Mechanical Properties of Compressed Wood in accordance with the Compression Rate
Introduction The structural use of the compressed wood has been getting reputations recently in terms of its high mechanical properties. We have especially focused on those which were made without any highly industrial treatment for fixation. Therefore they have environmentally-friendly characters and ability of self-recovering, which is expected to cope with the decrease of the stiffness on timber structures for a long term. Thus several types of mechanical fasteners using compressed wood have been developed. It is known that the mechanical characteristics of compressed wood are largely influenced by the compression rate (CR). However some of important properties of compressed wood for the structural use such as compression perpendicular to the grain have not been clarified yet. Moreover the behavior of compressed wood under combined stress conditions has not been clear which occurs in bending or in partial compression and so on. It is necessary in order to expand the use of compressed wood to optimize the manufacturing conditions and to introduce an easy estimation method on its physical value, in this research, we investigated the relationship between many kind of mechanical properties and CR, and introduced equations to estimate them by taking into account the variety of original material properties and the change of cell structure configuration and its arrangement.
