Utilization of Timber from Fast-Growing Lesser-Known Species in Sarawak, Malaysia
There has been an increasing awareness of the need to find other sources of timber for the wood-using industry. This is due to the growing scarcity of timber from the traditional sources such as the virgin and second growth forests. Currently, a number of fast-growing species from the second growth forests have the potentials to supply the raw materials to the wood users and consumers. However, information such as wood properties, processing requirements and advantages and benefits associated with the utilization of these species are still lacking. Man-made forests or forest plantations are becoming increasingly popular in supplying forest products throughout the world and this trend is also becoming overwhelming in Malaysia. Besides planting Acacia, agencies and small holders should look at some fast-growing lesser-known species (LKS) as plantation species. With the present market trend towards light-coloured wood, wood users should also look for sustainability of supply because this can affect production planning and control by the manufacturing firms. Neolamarkia cadamba, Azadirachta excelsa, Endospermum diadenum, llex cissoidea and Euodia alba are among the fast-growing tropical hardwood species in Sarawak and they have the potential to become plantation species to supply raw materials for veneer, plywood, timber for light construction, furniture and oriented strand boards and. This paper aims to highlight the physical and mechanical properties, drying and gluing properties of these fast-growing lesser-known species and their potential uses.
