Behavior of Lignin Macromolecules during Novel Saccharification Process of Lignocellulosics by Supercritical Water System

1. Introduction Supercritical water, due to change of some physical properties of water beyond its critical points (Tin>374℃ and Tp>220 bar); dielectric constant, thermal conductivity and ion products, loses its properties for neutral solvent, but it acts as a new reactive medium possessing a weak acid so that can dissolve any organic compounds (Calzavara et al. 2005). Actually, varieties of low molecular weight components were identified after supercritical water treatment of lignocellulosics(Saka et al. 1999). During SCW treatment of hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose and lignin fragmentation by pyrolysis reaction occur as main reactions. The purposes of this study were to evaluate a technical possibility of SCW treatment of lignocellulosics for fermentable sugar production and to investigate the decomposition behavior and slructural modification of lignin during SCW treatment.
