ANALYSIS OF WOOD VINEGAR FROM THREE WOOD SPECIES OF MANGROVE FOREST

Introduction Traditionally local people in South Kalimantan exploited the mangrove forest for timber used as raw material for charcoal. People still use traditional method to produced charcoal where a lot of smoke is also produced in the process. Smoke as by product has not been utilized, where as Yatagai (2004), found that smoke from charcoal processing can be condensed into liquid smoke and further be changed into wood vinegar which has a higher economic value than charcoal. Wood vinegar can be used in the preservation of fish, fruit and vegetables, for herbicide, natural fertilizer and so on. Erry Pumomo, et. al. (2006) has found that wood vinegar as fertilizer can increase production of red pepper up to 12 %.
