Biobleaching of Acacia Kraft Pulp with Eztracellular Enzymes Secreted by Lentinus sp. LP-7

Introduction In recent years, white rot fungi have attractive increasing interest as fungal possessing unique extracellular ligninolytic and cellulolytic enzyme complexes. These fungi arc known capable to destruct the main of wood component, particularly lignin and convert it to carbon dioxide and water. The fungus Lentinus tigrinus has demonstrated that has high ligninolytic activity, therefore it can be used for biobleaching process in pulp and paper industry. In previous study, we have succeeded to select several white rot fungal strains from fields in Indonesia for biobleaching of Acacia kraft pulp. The white rot fungus Lentinus sp. LP-7 is one of the selected new strains, which showed high level of brightness and kappa number compared to Trametes versicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium. In this study, we further use the extracellular enzymes of LP-7 to biobleach Acacia kraft pulp based on measuring kappa number reduction as indicator ofdelignification.
