Paper Properties of the ECF Bleached Pulp from Triploid of Populus tomentosa Carr
Triploid of Popu/us tomentosa carr. Is a promising raw material for the paper making and fiber industry. In this study, P. Tomentosa grown in shanxi was examined for its suitability for pulping with different alkaline pulping methods. The pulping trials were carried out using ASAM (alkali sulfite-anthraquinone methanol), AS-AQ (alkaline sulfite-anthraquinone) and Kraft methods. ASAM pulps were bleached to 86.3% ISO brightness in an ECF(elemental chlorine-free) DEpP bleaching. By contrast, the brightness of Kraft and ASAQ were 80.8% ISO and 84.8% ISO, respectively. It was also found that bleached ASAM pulps had higher tensile index, tear index, burst index and Folding endurance than Kraft, AS-AQ pulps at the nearly same beating degree. Therefore it would be suitable for the manufacture of writing and printing grades of paper, and the ASAM method was confirmed to be the most suitable pulping process for this species.
