Decay Resistance of the Wood- SiO2 Aerogel Composite

Introduction Wood modification with inorganic agents recently has been paid more attention because of low costs and nontoxic nature. Fabrication of wood-inorganic composite has been mostly done by the sol-gel process and properties of modified wood have been evaluated (Saka and Ogiso 1992, 1993; Donath et al 2004). In this research, wood-SiO2 aerogel composites with nano porous structure were fabricated by first preparing tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate (TEOS) sol, followed by impregnating the sol into wood and drying the composites with CO2 supercritical fluid. The brown-rot decay resistance of such wood-SiO2 aerogel composites was evaluated.
