Study on Compressed Preservative-treated Wood (CPW) Produced by Mized Sapwood and Heartwood of Chinese Fir
Introduction Compared with wood from natural forests, wood from plantation-grown forests is usually characterized by inferior mechanical properties and decay-resistance. Therefore, it is of great importance to improve both respects. Compression is a useful measure to increase wood density and then improve its mechanical properties. One aspect of the investigations on compressed wood is increasing liquid permeability by recovery of compression deformation. The heartwood is essentially impermeable to preservatives such as chromated copper arsenate (CCA), even under the cycled pressure treatment the improvement on permeability is not obvious and uneven. Ikuho lida have proved that the liquid penetration of pressure impregnated heartwood after compression was more than 25 times comparing with the untreated wood.
