Wood Vinegar as an Alternative for Wood Preservative

Introduction In Indonesia plantation forest has been developing which is mostly fast growing species, during the period of 1994-2007 the average planted forest was 169 thousand hectares per year, and until 2007 establishment of the forest covered 3.46 million ha. Average logs production during 2000-2005 was 13.86 million m3 per year which was consisting of 56.3 % from plantation forest and 43.7 from natural forest (Ministry of Forestry, 2007). Mindi (Melia azedarach) tree has been planting by community and enterprise because of fast growing, for example in Bogor the tree of 10 years age has 10 meters height branch free and 38 cm diameter at breast height (Balitbang Kehutanan, 2001). The wood belongs to strength class II-III and durability class IV-V or not resistant. To extend service life of timber can be done through wood preservation, and Hadi et al. (2005) stated that CCA was very effective for wood preservation purpose before 2000 era, but in early 21st century it was banned in almost any country because of poison to living organisms and environment.
