Development of Novel Flattening Method for Bamboo Cane
Introduction Sustainable utilization of forest resource is strongly required from the environmental conservation point of view in recent years. Therefore, development of effective methods to utilize the unused woody resources such as thinned logs and bamboos is urgent. Bamboo is known as the quick grower which takes only three years to reach maturity while timbers take 50 years, and because of its astounding growth ratio, bamboo is attracting attention as one of the most important and largest biomass in the Asian countries. Furthermore, bamboo is the vigorous plant which requires no agricultural inputs such as fertilization and pesticide application, and these bamboos vigorous characteristics enhances its value as sustainable resource. In addition, decrement of utilization ratio of bamboo caused by diffusion of plastic articles is causing many problems such as invading neighboring forests. Degraded bamboo grove is not possible to sufficiently contribute to the absorption of greenhouse gases, and its continual maintenance is highly required. Therefore, development of utilization method of bamboo is desirable not only for utilization of the unused resource but also for contribution to the environmental conservation.
