Development of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) Made of Small Diameter Acacia (Acacia mangium Willd.)
Introduction Oriented strand board (OSB) is one of the primary structural composites that are gaining increased utilization in both residential and commercial applications, such as sheeting, flooring, and 1-joist material in construction. OSB can be successfully produced from low density wood from fast-grown trees. In Indonesia small diameter fast growing species are usually used as a fuel or chips for pulp and paper raw material because of the limitation of the diameter and fundamental properties (high portion of juvenile wood). OSB as structural material and one of panel products is designed for plywood substitution. Unfortunately, in the future, plywood producers can no longer rely on the high quality and large diameter wood for their raw material. Based on the above condition, one of the solving this problem is production of OSB made of small diameter wood from fast growing species. In this case, we hope the strength of OSB is the same as plywood because it consists of three layers which are put cross each other.
