Research on Wettability of Bamboo and Chinese Fir Surface
Wood surface wettability has great influence on wood gluability. Wettabilities of bleached bamboo, carbonized bamboo and Chinese fir were discussed in this paper. Contact angles of distilled water, formamide and diiodomethane on samples were measured. Lewis acid-base components of the surface free energy of the samples were determined by basic wetting theory, and water penetration and spreading rate during wetting process was also quantified by a wetting model. Result showed that bamboo had higher polar free energy than Chinese fir. But the penetration and spreading rate of distilled water on bamboo was lower than Chinese fir. Polar free energy of bleached bamboo is higher than that of carbonized bamboo, that is, the former material was easier to be wetted by poplar liquid. Wettabilities of samples, especially Chinese fir were improved whether by increasing material moisture content or by sanding.
