Thermal Softening Behaviors of Bamboo Fiber by Chemical Modifications and the Contribution of Lignin

Introduction It is well known that chemical modifications such as etherification or esterification are usually applied to improve the thermal softening properties or thermofluidity of woods that is attributed to the internal plasticization between modified components. However, it was also shown that when the substituent groups that had small molecular size or high polarity were introduced, modified lignin within the wood performed as the internal plasticizer to increase the thermoplasticity of woods. In order to reveal the influences of the factors that contributed to thermal softening behaviors and improve thermal softening properties of bamboo fiber by chemical modification, we applied acetylation and allylation. The influences of the chemical modifcations, the reaction conditions and the chemical characteristics of lignin on thermal softening behaviors of bamboo fibers were investigated.
