Effect of Formulation and Testing Variables on Thermo-gravimetric Properties of Natural Fiber High Density Polyethylene Composites
Introduction The fact that natural fibers have to be mixed with molten polymers in a processing system to produce natural fiber plastic composites implies that thermal stability of these composites needs to be evaluated in order to have a better understanding of the composite materials behavior in processing phase and later while recycling. Thermal degradation is therefore, one major limitation frequently encountered when using natural fibers as reinforcement in a polymeric matrix. Thermo-gravimetrie analysis (TGA) is a useful technique for the study of the thermal stability of composite materials. Because different natural fibers are composed of different percentages of constituents, their thermal decomposition profiles would be different as well. Fiber content can also play an important role in the thermal stability of the composite material. The objectives of the present paper are to provide basic understanding on thermal degradation of various natural fiber HDPE composites through thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The effects of compatibilizer and heating rate on thermal stability of the composites will also be presented. FTIR spectroscopy was used to study structural changes associated with the thermal degradation.
