Preparation of Paper-based Polyurethane Composite with Bamboo Kraft Lignin

1. Introduction The amount of lignin is only inferior to the cellulose, which was about 20%~30% of the amount of plant fibrous material. In China, most pulp mills with large scale recycle energy and chemicals from black liquid during the alkali recovery stage and its value needs to be further increased. While for the small scale pulp mill, which do not have alkali recovery stage, black liquid is drained directly into rivers or lakes, which leads to not only the waste of resources but also the sever environment pollution. Separating lignin from waste liquid will solve the pollution problem and increase the value of lignin, which has great value in improving economic development and protecting environment. In many advanced industrial country, lignin industry has been developed rapidly with more than 200 sorts of lignin products, the lignin has been used widely in many fields. Polyurethane is one of the most useful polymers, whose industrial production based on the reaction between multi-organic isocyanates and kinds of hydrogen donor. However, this process also produces lots of wastes, which not only increase the cost but also cause environment pollution. Cellulose and lignin contain highly reactive hydroxyl groups, including alcoholic hydroxyl and phenolic hydroxyl that can partly replace polyols, which can be used as reactive chemicals to form polyurethane. One possible way of the development of environmentally compatible polymers is the preparation of biodegradable polymers, including cellulose-based polyurethane, lignin-base polyurethane. In this paper, a new composite based on paperboard were prepared to develop a new way of utilization of lignin.
