The Influence of Wood-flour on Combustion and Thermal Degradation of PVC in Wood-flour/PVC Composites

Introduction There is a growing trend to use wood fibers as fillers in rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. Wood-flour/PVC composite (WF-PVC) is a novel material in which wood-fiber or wood-flour is used not only as the filler but also reinforcement for PVC resin, processed by techniques familiar to plastics industry. With the development of WF-PVC, the fire-retardance aspect of the specification is always the first and most important item to be considered. There are few publications, however, contain information about the effect of the wood-flour on the combustion and thermal degradation of PVC in WF-PVC, especially using Cone Calorimeter (CONE). In this paper we investigated the effects of wood-flour on combustion and thermal degradation of PVC in WF-PVC. The results showed that the interaction occured between wood-flour and PVC during the process of burning and thermal degradation analyzed by cone calorimeter (CONE) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which could help to study the mechanism of fire-retardant and smoke-suppressant of WF-PVC.
