The Synergistic Fire Retardant Effects of Ezpandable Graphite with Ammonium Polyphosphate on Wood Flour Polypropylene Composites
Introduction Wood-plastic composite (WPC) have been accepted by more and more people because of its good appearance, moderate mechanical properties and environmental friendly characteristics. This kind of composite materials has been applied to construction, furniture, automobile industry, and even more interesting prospect in indoor decoration field. Fire retardancy of Wood-Plastic Composites is an important factor for their interior use because both wood fiber and plastics are flammable. The conventional halogenated compounds are good fire-retardant additives for polyolefin. However, halogen-containing polymers generally evolve large amounts of corrosive, obscuring and toxic smoke during combustion, thus the research and development turn towards halogen-free flame retardants formulation. The most extensively used additive type fire-retardants are intumescent fire-retardants. Ammonium phosphate (APP) and expandable graphite (EG) have been used as effective intumescent fire-retardants for polymer. However, there has little reported in the literature on fire-retardant behavior of EG and its interaction with APP in WPWPC. And even less literature on the fire retardant research of WPC can be retrieved. In the present work, the object is to study the synergistic fire retardant effect of EG with APP on wood flour-polypropylene composites by calorimeter analysis.
