Development and Ezperimental Evaluation of Automatic Marker Registration System for Tracking of Augmented Reality

For the application of augmented reality in plant maintenance work, real-time tracking and measuring technology with higher accuracy is necessary. This study focused on the tracking method using cameras and paper-based markers. The 3D-position of every collocated marker must be measured in advance, but it is inconvenient by measuring manually, especially when marker number is large. An automatic marker registration system was developed to solve this problem. The system is composed of a camera and a laser rangefinder. They are both connected to a PC, and their pointing direction can be controlled by PC through motion base. The system can measure the 3D-position of each marker automatically. Feasibility evaluation was taken in Fugen nuclear plant by people who were familiar with the marker measure process but never used the system before. Although some other problems are to be solved, this system is expected to be useful for supporting fieldwork.
