Evaluation of Fatigue Cracks by Angle Beam EMAT and EC Dual Probe
The authors have proposed a novel probe combining EMAT (Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer) and EC (Eddy Current)Probe as a multi-probe with simple structure and showed that the probe combines the advantages carried by ultrasonic testing (UT) and eddy current testing (ECT). In this paper, the above multi-probe is improved in order to evaluate fatigue cracks in austenitic stainless steel specimens. The probe consists of a permanent magnet and meander coil to generate shear-vertical wave propagating obliquely in the specimens. The structure of the magnet and coils were designed, considering crack sizing capability of both EMAT and ECT modes. The experimental results showed that the present probe in the EMAT and EC mode has a capability of shallow and deep cracks on the backside, respectively, which indicates that the present probe provides accurate evaluations of fatigue cracks with various depth.
