Study on Operation Characteristics of Natural Circulation and Forced Circulation in Nuclear Power Plant

Natural circulation is an effective operation mode to improve inherent safety and to provide ability of passive residual heat removal for nuclear power plant. The thermo-hydraulic model and the two-group three-dimension space-time neutron kinetics model for the reactor and reactor coolant system (RCS) of a certain type of nuclear power plant were established in the paper and simulation program based on these models were completed. The transition processes from natural circulation to forced circulation with different initial reactor power and different control conditions were simulated. The results show that the initial reactor power plays an important role in the transition process;high initial reactor power is likely to threaten the safety of transition process. The intervention measure that lifting control rods by operators was presented and was proved effective to improve the safety of the transition process. The results also show that the models are highly precise and can meet the need of engineering analyses.
