Necessity of Supporting Situation Awareness for Preventing Overtrust in Automation
Purpose It is necessary to clarify how a human operator comes to expect that an automated system can perform a task successfully even beyond the limit of automation. Method We propose a model of trust in automation by which we are able to discuss how operators trust in automation becomes overtrust. On the basis of the model, we conduct an experiment using a microworld to examine whether the range of users expectation exceeds the limit of the capability of automation. Result For three out of 33 participants, excessive trust was observed as a result of unintended use of automation, in which a subject intended manual control but pushed use automation button mistakenly. The operation was successful by chance. Conclusion It is necessary to support correct situation awareness in order to prevent over-trust in automation.
