Lessons Learned from Modernization of Main Control Room
Purpose of this paper is to explain the lessons learned during modernization of Kori-1 and Korean standard nuclear power plants. Kori-1 was partially modified in 2007 and will be renovated entirely in 2013. Digital devices are introduced and standard alone computer systems are integrated into plant computer. The initial scope and period of modernization have changed due to configuration and economical constraints. KSNP I&C is supposed to be upgraded in 2015. However the site engineers and operators are reluctant to the advanced systems. A prototype is being developed to evaluate user interfaces and I&C architecture, and increase acceptance level of the operators and field engineers. The 1st layer displays are based on simplified P&ID, and the 2nd and 3rd layers are edited for additional information. The layers are linked through context sensitive menu. The end point view of MCR is also suggested considering reliability and operability of digital systems. Finally modernization strategies over the overhaul periods are suggested without much impact on operation and configuration effort. The 1st and 2nd stages are scheduled to non-safety and safety I&C upgrade respectively. The final stage is devoted to the MCR.
