Training Principles for Process Control Tasks and Innovative Approaches to Training
We outline how the training of control room operators can contribute to safety and risk management by enhancing their decision making capability and competence. Three training studies conducted with the same simulated process control task are compared for system control, fault finding performance and temporal and adaptive transfer of acquired knowledge and skills. Drill and practice training promoted the temporal transfer of fault finding and should be supplemented by other training methods. We conclude that one needs to consider training approaches in their order of appearance, keeping in mind the strategic long-term training program as a whole.
