Upgrading of Core Cooling Monitors for Ulchin NPPs

KOPEC is performing a project with KHNP to replace the Core Cooling Monitor (CCM) for Ulchin nuclear power plant (NPP) units 1 and 2 in Korea from May, 2006. The CCM is a computer based monitoring system to monitor the saturation margin of reactor coolant and the core exit temperature, and to provide an alarm during abnormal operating conditions. The existing CCMs have been in operation for twenty years since 1988. Recently they have caused difficulties in maintenance due to obsolescence of spare parts and KHNP decided to replace them with new ones. New CCM is designed to have the same functions of the existing one, but its performance, reliability and maintainability are enhanced through many design improvements. The replacement work of the CCM is performed step-by-step with an approval of the regnlatory agency. One train for Ulehin NPP unit 1 was replaced with new one on September 2007 and so far operates successfully without any problem. Two trains for Ulchin NPP unit 2 will be replaced on September 2008 and the remaining train for Ulchin NPP unit 1 will be replaced during the next overhaul on May 2009.
