Changing of Internal Governance Mode and Performance in Family Firms after Professional Manager Recruitment
This paper took 110 small and medium-sized family firms in areas of Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces as the sample firms, and tested their internal governance modes and the firm performance after employing professional managers, using methods of median split and ANCOVA. The results of this paper shows, taking contractual and relational governance as the dimensions, the internal governance modes can be classified into four groups (according their degree of contractual and relational governing): high contractual governance and high relational governance, high contractual governance and low relational governance, low contractual governance and high relational governance, and low contractual governance and low relational governance. Family firms adopting high contractual governance and high relational governance perform best. Those with high contractual governance and low relational governance list second. Those having low contractual governance and high relational governance goes third, and family firms using low contractual governance and low relational governance have the worst performance.
