The potential use of scanner data in Chinese CPI compilation: Perspectives and related problems

摘要：

Scanner data has some advantages compared with data collected traditionally. They are beneficial for reducing the CPI biases including the commodity substitution bias, the new goods bias and the quality change bias. They are also helpful for assessing the weighting bias. With scanner data more choices about the aggregate method are available. While scanner data is widely used in the empirical research and some statistical organizations, there is almost no research about the application in China. More researches should be done about how to collect and deal with scanner data in China and how to compile the elementary index with scanner data. Good institutions should be made in order to make use of scanner data more effectively.
