Productivity Change in Chinese Industry

This paper is an extension of the research which Chen, Jefferson, Rawski, Wang and Zheng conducted in 1988. By following the same methodology, the new series of capital stock and labor input according to Chinese statistical practice are figured out, and based on the newly revised data; Chinas industrial productivity is re-estimated. This extension research confirms the study results of Chen et al. I find a modest productivity growth in Chinese state-owned industry in the long run (1953-1996), a rapid growth during the first five-year plan (1953-57) and the reform period (1979-96), and a slight growth in the intervening decades (1957-78). Meanwhile, it is found that the productivity growth during 1989-1996 slowed down compared with that in the initial period of reform (1979-1988).
