Development of Shared Understanding between CIO and Top Management Team: A Knowledge Sharing Perspective
Effective initiation and implementation of information systems projects depends on the cooperation between the Chief Information Officers (CIO) and top management team (TMT) members, which is based on their mutual understanding about the potential for information systems to support and enhance the strategy of the organization. Knowledge sharing provides us a theoretical perspective in explaining the development of shared understanding between CIO and TMT members. In this paper, we identify three important antecedents of shared CIO/TMT understanding and propose a conceptual model to depict the develop process. The potential links between knowledge of the top executives, systems of knowledge sharing, mutual trust and shared understanding are described. We suggest that all of the three antecedents facilitate the development of shared understanding, and that mutual trust moderate the effects of knowledge of the top executives and systems of knowledge sharing on shared CIO/TMT understanding. Finally, we discuss implications for researchers.
