A Review on the Theory of Planned Obsolescence
Jeremy Bulow (1986) suggested that Planned Obsolescence was the production of goods with uneconomically short useful lives so that customers would have to make repeat purchases. Scholars in foreign countries have developed lots of rich researches on this problem. However, few literatures are seen in domestic until now. Therefore, there have been important both theoretical and practical meanings for us to make relative studies. This paper begins from the concept and the model of planned obsolescence and examines relative studies mainly five aspects: network externality and compatibility choice, the durability of durable goods, new product introduction, technological progress and R&D decision, etc. Lastly, social welfare is talked about.
