Concerted Growth of Bone Traits

Bone must be rigid for leverage yet light for mobility. Bones structure determines the loads tolerated but the loads imposed also determine its structure. The growth of bone length, taking place by a process called endochondral ossification in growth plate, is largely genetically determined, whereas, the growth of bone width, driven by periosteal apposition, is more amenable to modification by mechanical loading, especially the strain exerted by muscle. Obviously, addressing the growth in bone length and width separately provides more information in understanding how differences in modeling and remodeling during growth establish diversity in bone size, shape and mass achieving the paradoxical properties of strength yet lightness.
