EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON CYCLONE AIR GASIFICATION OF RICE HUSK

IntroductionChina has studied most kinds of gasifying technologies, which included up-draft, down-draft, stratified down-draft and circulating fluidized bed (CFB) gasifiers many of which have found practical applications 1. But among all the existing technologies of biomass gasification, neither fixed bed nor fluidized bed can satisfy the requirements of industrial application completely because of their structural characteristics and operational conditions, being heavily influence by the type and structure of the biomass source. Cyclone gasifier is a type of entrained-flow bed used as a gas cleaner as well as a gasifier 2-3. This approach was first studied by Fredriksson and Kallner who made experiments at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. At the beginning of 1993, the research was continued at the Lulea University of Technology 4. An inverted cyclone gasifier was designed by C. Syred et al. The gasifier was designed with a vortex collector pocket (VCP) and a central collector pocket (CCP) to maximise particle and ash separation from the flow, and remove alkali and other heavy metal traces that agglomerate with the ash particles 5. The biomass resources of rice husk in China are huge, within an annual production of more than 30 million tons. Investigations into cyclone gasification of rice husk have been non existent and offers significant benefits over the more traditional technologies. The mass and heat transfer in the cyclone gasifier are intensely, which volume is smaller than the fixed bed at the same load. And it can reduce the cleaning equipment after the gasifier. The significant advances can be made in reducing initial investment.
